The 727 transmission is the same for Chrysler and AMC EXCEPT for the bell housing bolt pattern, so the cases won't interchange. You can use everything except the main case from the Dodge tranny on the AMC tranny, but that means tearing both apart to fix one. I agree with Ken -- it would be easy enough to put the TH-400 on the later 360. The late 70s Jeep TH-400 is cast with an AMC bell housing pattern. 68-early 70s models (around 74?) used an adapter. Just remember to get a pilot bushing for the 81 engine (pilot for a 75-79 Jeep 360 w/TH-400). You may be able to remove and reuse the original -- IIRC it's a thin steel bushing. Without one the TC can get off center and cause vibration problems -- the TC bolts don't line it up good enough! Now here's what will be an unpopular option -- mount the Dodge engine and trans in the Jeep. It will fit, but you will have to do a little fab work on the engine mounts. I have no idea how close they are to the location of the AMC mounts. If the Dodge mounts have a single stud on the bottom that will make things much easier. You will have to convert the Dodge trans to 4x4 or just make the Waggy 2WD. Converting the trans using the AMC 727 parts requires a complete disassembly of the trans as you have to change the output shaft. If you leave it 2WD you'll just need to have the driveshaft from the van shortened (assuming the u-joints are the same size -- may have to mate Dodge and Waggy shaft ends -- no more $$ than shortening the shaft, should be under $200 since you have all parts). Take the front driveshaft out unlock the hubs, maybe even remove the locking hubs so they can't be locked. After a little wire splicing you'll at least have a driving vehicle. ---------------- Date: Sun, 2 Dec 2007 19:11:08 -0800 From: "Jamie Smith" <oconner51@xxxxxxxxxxx> My brother wanted me to check on the possibility of an engine/transmission interchange on the following vehicles. I don't think it will work but I am asking to make him happy. I have two jeep wagoneers that I am selling. One is a 78 with a 360 and th400 auto. Has engine knock. Second one is an 81 with 360 and 727 auto. Not sure of engine condition, I was told it has a bad tranny. He has a 78 Dodge van with a 360 and either 727 or 999. He wants to know if the engine and or tranny will go into either of the wags. Thanks for any advice. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
