I've always thought that since it was an upgrade over the 199 or 196 that the automatic generally got installed along with the 232.
  I've seen the 232 standard combo a lot more often when they went into the classics as the upgrade engines on those are typically the V-8's.
 But, yeah the 232/auto is not a given, just a common way things were done.
