Greetings: Agreed that the fluid ought NOT get 'that' hot.. My experience with a similar event was that some 'Yucky' had found it's way into the pump and thus into the piston-thingie which actually 'drives' the steering. The experience was a mind-DUH! to say the least.. It was an (almost) entirely redone '63... I started it on my trailer and let it idle...inside of a mere 'few' minutes (less than 5) I noticed something going stupid under the hood. I opened the hood just in time to see a power steering hose spring a few leaks...it'd pretty much fried itself from heat...blistered and kind of smokey. Replaced the leakers and it repeated the fun. Put a two line digital thermometer into the radiator and the P/S pump and found the fluid heated up far and away faster than the radiator did...I didn't allow it to blow up the hoses this time...but the fluid in one measurement was in excess of 300degrees FIVE MINUTES after the fact...that told me the fluid had super-heated.. Time for investigation... When I broke the system down in the little valve in that piston-thingie had yuckified...just a fairly small amount of crap at that found its way into the pump when it was opened and wiped.... Once removed and the system was reassembled all nice and clean..it's worked just fine since. So....if your fluid is superheating...deYuckify it...it's going to require a disassembly as far as I can tell (but perhaps that depends on what is in it. Since it was NOT in the pump (which is what I'd originally thought) but in the piston, there was only one way to clear it...and that was dismantle and clean it. I have no idea how 'hot' that system ought be, but I do know when it burns the hoses from the inside out, it most likely is too hot.*hehehehe...that's an understatement!*. Even though it was 'clogged', the system still steered with proper power so one would have thought it was 'OK'... I take the hoses off the pump and face them down into a pail then force air back through the return line, through the box and turn the wheel back and forth to empty the system. Replace it all with fresh synthetic fluid and call it good unless it still heats up. If everything works right otherwise I'd suspect a bad/sticky bearing in the pump itself. Friction could be heating the fluid. That's the only thing I can think of, as anything inside the steering box would cause steering problems. I'd change the pump. With it sitting 25 years it is very likely gummed up from old PS fluid. ------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2007 18:20:23 -0400 From: Don <don_nsx@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Guys,,,,,, a question ??? I am in the process of getting my 70 AMX back on the road and something odd is occuring to my power steering, in my opinion. It all seems to work correctly, but the fluid reservior gets awfully hot after a normal drive. Hot enough that you can't check the level without gloves. It's been 25 years since the car was on the road but I don't remember there being that much heat there. What do you guys think? Is that normal? And if it isn't, what is causing the problem? I guess I could add a power steering cooler like some of the newer iron out there, but would rather not.
