I agree with you Bruce! I tried mixing and burning old gas in my lawn mower, about 20-25% old and 75-80% new. Didn't run well and I had to remove and clean the carb twice before it was cleaned up! 

I think old gas is the main reason for sticking valves in the old 196. I had one that sat for six months due to an axle problem. cold weather, and finding time to fix it. The valves started sticking once it was cranked and run a while! That's the only time I've had one that sat so short a time stick, could have been the quality of the gas (or rather lack of!) that was last run in it. I ran a can of engine flush through it and changed the oil, then used some "Seafoam" in the oil. That pretty much fixed it. One that has sat a long time will more likely need disassembling and cleaning, like Tom Jenning's latest acquisition.

I would NOT, repeat NOT recommend burning old gas in ANY quantity in your
vehicle. Unless it's about to come apart for a valve grind. Because if you
burn enough, it WILL need one!
 I see heads quite often that have had old fuel run through them. They are
a MESS!! The insides of the intake ports are coated with sticky varnish
that even the hot cleaner won't take off. It has to be blasted off.
 It will also collect on the intake valve stems causing them to stick.
