A webs earch, find the instruction for a GM three wire internal reg and bolt it all in!
You can wire the light up and keep it.
Matt Haas has an article up on it IIRC, Ithink his url is Mattsoldcars.com? search it out.
I used my alt light for a check engine light when I did my efi conversion.
Now I run an aftermarket set of gauges and a volt gauge. The H.O. efi triggers a check engine for an alt failure.
So It's all covered.
 I know your not going to efi on the 196, I'm just rambling...
