Probably you just have the wrong mirror. Many years, AMC used the same mirror bodies with different bases for different car lines. Hornets, Gremlins, Eagles, etc. use one base that's nearly vertical. Matadors, Ambassadors, and Javelins use a different one that's about a forty-five degree angle to vertical. If you put the small car mirror on a big car or Javelin, you get the problem you describe...
