Well, I attacked it last night, and I actually found a different (maybe
better, you be the judge) way of doing this.   There are a couple of
fairly large openings in the sheet metal crossmember some inches away
from where the bolts go.  So I punched out the old backing nuts with an
air hammer (per that same web page that also says to cut access holes in
the trunk floor under the carpet).   However, instead of cutting out
some access holes, I just used a flexible spring-loaded 4-finger
"fishing/grabbing" tool thingie I have to pull in some grade-8 5/16"
bolts through the afore-mentioned openings.   Worked great.  Then just
mounted the shocks with nuts and washers on those "hanging" bolts,
gunned them tightish with the impact (tightish enough so the bolt didn't
turn), then final torque with the torque wrench.  The whole process took
a total of ~20 minutes.   I'm a happy camper!!

Towel or large rag to lay on your belly, metal chips can get hot!
Safety goggles! Metal chips can hurt!
I used both and it was easy....
