I know vent windows were optional up through at least 1994. In 1997, Cherokees got one-piece front door glass, eliminating the smaller glass entirely. While the 97-up door will physically fit onto an older Jeep body and externally line up, the inner structure of the door is different enough that you'd also have to utilize the 97-up door trim panels as the inside door handle is located differently. I would LOVE to have the one-piece door glass in my 94 XJ, but when I saw all the differences in the door structure and the window mechanisms, I figured I'd leave well enough alone. That said, all 1984-1996 Jeep XJ doors are interchangeable (4-door to 4-door, 2-door to 2-door, of course). It's a very easy mod to add the moveable vent windows to XJs that originally had fixed glass-it's all a bolt in operation that doesn't even require removal of the larger door glass. I did so on my 94 XJ. However, I will be removing the moveable vents shortly and reinstalling the original fixed glasses. The reason for this is that the moveable windows leak whenever it rains more than just a light shower. The one on the passenger door leaks right down on/over the power window and lock switches. I haven't been able to determine a way to stop the leaking and still have functional vents.
