Re: [Amc-list] cam or what

Tom,
SNIP
So John, I took my 258 Hornet for a ride tonight, and ran it up, and it
pulled
like hell from 3000 through 4500 without letting up, then broke the tires
loose when it hit second. No trans shift kit. 2.54 axle, so 4500rpm is
48mph.

Stock? Or cam?
SNIP
Sounds like it could be a mild cam Tom, there are a number of them out
there that will let it run really well and still pass smog. Specially since
the factory cams seem to be tailored for torque peaks about 1500 rpms. When
we all caravanned to St. louis Eric (the Black Pacer) and I had just gotten
our rebuild 258's running and they were identical including the Iskenderian
Cam and you had that 304 Gremlin with an RV cam as I recall and were sort of
mumbling that the V8 would not twist too tight. RV cams are another Beasty
that are designed for low RPM torque and fall on their faces at higher rpms.
Both Eric and I had to pass Arizona Smog but with the Isky cam selected it
was a walk in the park but still they would wind out in the manner you
described even using a BBD 2bl carburetor. A YF is not that much smaller and
should pretty much run the same way but would limit upper rpms as it would
just run out of carburetor. Mine would start to fall on it's face in second
some where around 4000 rpm and it really would not rev that much higher
easily, but the AMX, Valeries Stock AMX same year etc, but bone stock is
really dead by the time it hits 3800. It doesn't take much cam to wake up an
I6, just treat the thing like a baby v8 and it will run like one. Even under
square.
The only difference between what you are describing and the installation of
FI on mine is there no longer is a carburetion issue and it will run up well
over 5 grand now and just flat run out of cam. With the BBD I had WOT 2/3
shift set for 4000 rpm which worked real well, but with FI Ic could set it
for about 4200 or 4300 which is 75mph and the back end will kick sideways
when it shifts hard, it uses up ALL of the slop in the rear springs etc.
