They started recomending 7500 mile oil changes way back in the 80's. I would not do it with conventional oil unless it is totally warm climate highway miles. My first job at Tewells was a lube guy, exciting I know!. I saw the 7500 mile cars on dyno, No way, it was nasty. Those cars had the most mechanical problems too. I don't buy the 3,000 mile changes much either. I split the difference at 5K on conventional. I'd use synthetic if I could trust someplace to put it in. I have been so busy I've been letting the shops change the oil. I'm not wild about it, but theres only so many hours in the day! With three vehicles on the road I just couldn't keep up. If your running 10w-40 in a 4.0L you will see a difference in gas mileage going to synthetics. I ran 10W-30 in my 96 and synthetic fluids brought me 1mpg in town increase! At 50K on it I changed both axles and the AX15 to Mobil 1 along with the engine. I did not bother with the transfer case as it ran ATF and spec'd a change every 12K. I guess synthetic tranny fluid would let you increase the change interval, but on a non presurized, non filtered system such as the t-case I just kept it changed and didn't worry about it. The cold starts are markedly different. At 0 degrees it cranked and fired like it was 70 out! No grunt, no slow crank, nothing. -- Mark Price Morgantown, WV 1969 AMC Rambler, 4.0L, EFI, T-5 " I was different before people dared to be different" -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: adh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (Sandwich Maker) > you're convincing me... but when my gf got her '01 cherokee last year > i was surprised to see in the manual that they recomend 3k oil changes > only for 'severe service' [subfreezing weather, short trips, etc]. > for 'normal' service the factory recommended change interval is -8000- > miles! > > i think i'm gonna start pricing various mobil 1 formulations... their > 'racing 4t 10w40' is sg/cf rated. > ________________________________________________________________________ > Andrew Hay the genius nature > internet rambler is to see what all have seen > adh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and think what none thought > _______________________________________________ > Amc-list mailing list > Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx > http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
