AGGHHH!!! NUMBERS!!! (I just finished watching "23" with the wife... and I recently put out the AMC numbers book...) Tom, you're correct -- only V-8s in Ambassadors from 1958-1964. When the 232 came out across the board in 65 it was added to the Ambo line. The 195.6 was just a bit over adequate in the Classic at the time, can't have that in the flagship! All Ambos had 327s, no 287s. The 327 came in 2V or 4V high compression flavors starting in 1960. 58-59 models were all 4V high compression (high was 9.7:1, standard 8.7:1). Series numbers: 0 - 58-68 American, 66-69 Rogue, 69 Rambler, 70-77 Hornet, 78-83 Concord (actually series 01 -- all others add a zero to the end, 1 = Series 10, etc.) 1 - 50-60 Rambler Six (yes, even the small body Nash Rambler!), 61-66 Classic, 66-70 Rebel, 71-74 Matador, 74-78 Matador Coupe (Matador sedan/wagon took over Series 80 when the Ambo was phased out) 2 - 57 Rambler V-8 (except special edition Rebel, there were 250 powered Ramblers in 57), 58-60 Rebel (all V-8 Ramblers were renamed Rebel), 61 Classic V-8 (after 61 the different series number for V-8s was dropped) 3 - 57 Rambler Special Edition (w/327), 68-70 two seater AMX, 80-88 Eagle (except SX/4) 4 - 55-56 Statesman/Wasp*, 70-78 Gremlin, 79-83 Spirit 5 - 56 Ambassador/Hornet Special*, 65-67 Marlin, 81-83 Eagle SX/4 6 - 55-56 Ambassador/Hornet 6*, 75-80 Pacer 7 - 68-74 Javelin 8 - 55-57 Ambassador/Hornet 8*, 58-74 Ambassador, 75-78 Matador 9 - Alliance/Encore *The model number on Hudsons has a "3" in front of the year to distinguish Hudson models from Nash. Body styles (fourth digit in body number): 1 - Two Door Convertible (54 only) 2 - Two Door Business Sedan (55-63 only) (A flat storage platform replaced the back seat to increase storage space) 3 - Hardtop Wagon (56-60 only) 3 - Two Door Hatchback (73-83) 4 - Two Door Wagon (54-63) 5 - Four Door Sedan 6 - Two Door Sedan 7 - Two Door Hardtop (54-57) 7 - Two Door Convertible (61-68) 8 - Four Door Wagon 9 - Four Door Hardtop (56-60) 9 - Two Door Hardtop (63-75) -------------- Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2007 18:49:55 -0700 From: Tom Jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [Amc-list] Take a look at a tired old Rambler On Saturday 04 August 2007 17:32:40 Ken Ames wrote: > > Tag on passenger side spring tower would tell also. Jay, I think the door tag should read "6310" for 63 classic (10 series). Isn't 50 series rebel or something? Wagons were 6381 (ambo) 6311? (classic) or some such. I've been wrong before... once, back in 1901.
