Ross, if it's an authentic Pierre Cardin car, it is pretty rare, and
that will up the value over a standard SST. I'd take the "1 of 12" with
a grain of salt. It may very well be 1 of 12 with that specific
combination of interior, engine, trans, and color. That doesn't make it
more valuable than the same combo with say a different exterior color.
From the limited info you gave, what makes that car more valuable than
other 72 SST Javelins is (in order of precedence) :
1) the Pierre Cardin interior - few were made, and even fewer survive
intact. If it's a well preserved (not badly faded or worn -- the nylon
fades easily) original it would be worth more than a repro.
2) The 401. Naturally the biggest engines are more desireable.
3) Low mileage.
The sidepipes are a toss-up -- they could go either way. That is if they
are the dealer installed (I don't think the factory installed them,
might be wrong on this issue!), factory authorized (as in it didn't hurt
your warranty) pipes. I forget the brand/trade name on them now! If you
like them they are a plus, if not, they could be a minus. Aftermarket
pipes that aren't repros of the factory authorized ones would be a minus
in my opinion. That is for a restored car. If it were being appraised as
a custom it all depends on fit and finish, and how they "flow" with the
rest of the car.
Assuming this is a #2 car (#1 would be museum quality), the VMR price
guide gives $6K for an AMX, $5.2K for an SST. Add 25% for the 401, 7% if
it's a four speed, and 10% if it has AC (take the percentage from the
base price, then add to it, don't take the percentage as you add!). They
don't give anything for the PC interior, but I'd add 25% for that as
well -- provided it's in great condition. That gives you a ball-park
figure to negotiate from. So that's around $10K to start. All price
guides are generally outdated by a few months, and notoriously
underestimate AMCs. If the car is in excellent condition, it's value is
more likely in the $12K-$18K range. If you're spending more than $18K
you'd be better off (from an investment point of view) to get a good two
seat AMX. Some Javelins have gone for over $20K, and there are a small
number worth $25K+ (Dewayne Ashmead's Mopar show winner, for instance),
but those are few and far between. It all depends on how much he
likes/wants the car.
