Yeah, I often look at extreme/specialist use of systems and components (cars or otherwise) for exactly that reason -- a trans that held up "for only one season" of vertical rock climbing would probably last 250Kmi in my Hornet or Rambler. Oversizing stuff is attractive, but has it's downsides. A built 727 behind a six will never break, but it's a huge waste of power.
