Re: [Amc-list] replace fuel filler hoses?

Justin, you can get 2" fuel proof hose at NAPA, and likely other auto parts stores. I bought a piece of 2" exhaust tubing that was "belled" on one end (for another piece of 2" tubing to slide into) with the correct curve in it. I don't recall if I had to bevel the end to get the right angle or not, but you may have to (I did this on an American, but the filler neck was similar). The belled end can be tack welded to the piece that holds the filler cap on, but make sure the bell clears the cap. I tack welded in a four spots (about 1/4" long tacks) then epoxied around the rest. If you use a strong epoxy and let it set up at least 24 hours epoxy alone should be strong enough. Make sure the surfaces are clean and roughed up a bit.

The tubing you get from NAPA will be a bit thick, so use pre-bent 2" exhaust for any bends. Just cut the tubing and clamp on each side of the bends. You may need a close/tight 90 or 45 right near the cap, and even a 45 may need to have the end cut at an angle to fit.

This is a permanent solution! I tried using flex exhaust tubing, but couldn't get it tight enough on the tank neck. You could epoxy it on the tank and clamp high up near the cap though.

Hi, Guys:

I have two different '62 Classics with sort of leaking fuel filler hoses; both are very dry-rotted and cracking where they are clamped to the tank inlet. Actually, it would be fair to say that all of my cars probably have filler hoses in different degrees of decay, but only two of them are actively leaking when I put gas in the cars.

These hoses have a 2" interior diameter, and the end where you screw on the fuel cap has a lip molded into it that the fuel cap bracket screws thru, using sheet metal screws, into the body panel.

Yesterday I patched up one with some gasket material and a clamp. It solved for problem for now, but it is just a cheap, ugly patch. The other hose had a chunk fall off of it when I removed the tank, and isn't patchable.

I assume that these hoses are no longer available, and the presence of the lip on the top end of the hose means that it will be hard to make do with something else.

Anyone else find a fix or solution to the problem?
