Re: [Amc-list] Re; newer Strut Rod Bushings and more

The short answer on strut bushing assembly instructions is, there is no
short answer.

I'm not being (merely) glib. There are a bunch of different designs out
there and many of them require different assembly methods. THAT is the
problem. AMC used different designs at different times (even if it was
only 'top of the bin'). AMC, Moog, McQuay, etc, all engineered different
replacement parts. For replacement purposes, a ball joint is a ball
joint is a ball joint (but even there, they're factory rivets and
aftermarket bolts :-)

Off the top of my head:
 * One-piece, welded ring,
 * one-piece, compression only,
 * two-piece, with three metal parts (cup washer, spacer, cupwasher)
   ** assembled with washers pointing in various directions
 * two-piece with four metal parts (above, plus a thin 'cup' to prevent
collapse of front half) (NAPA)
 * two-piece, with two metal parts (washers with half-spacers integral)
 * hard poly versions of some of the above
 * probably more

This indicates to me a bad factory design, and a lot of attempts to "fix
it up" in the aftermarket/repair market.

The TSMs are generally low on procedural stuff, even when proper
procedure really matters.

(Hmm, I haven't looked at a Chiltons in years, though I have some; maybe
they have replacement info?)
