If it's not the valve body you have a broken or stuck sealing ring or servo seal. The trans could most likely be taken apart and freshened up with a kit and work great for another 10 years or more. No guarantees though. In any case, it's best to take apart and claen any used trans that old that has been sitting a while. It's common for an old one like that to pop a seal somewhere when it's been put back in service after sitting for a couple years or more. I've had one that was rebuilt, drove a couple years, then put out to pasture for 18 months do the same thing. I lost forward gears, still had first and reverse. My problem was the valve body though. Did you totally disassemble the valve body and thoroughly clean it, blowing through all passages? Just make sure you don't loose any of the various balls and springs, or misplace them when reassembling. Everything must be as clean as possible! The BW auto trans is one of the easiest to rebuild if you decide to try it. The sealing

 in the center can be hard to get back in, but here's a trick: Put axle grease on the rings, wrap with a metal band or aluminum foil, then lock them down with radiator hose clamps. Throw the shaft in the freezer for 3-4 hours (or overnight). When ready to reassemble remove the clamps and such and stick the shaft in before it thaws. You should have at least 30-45 minutes to work. The old rings are cast iron and a PITA to pull off or put on without breaking. The new kits have a synthetic teflon ring which is much easier to work with, but still a bit on the brittle side. Not near as bad as cast iron, but still require a bit of care.

well, i pulled the valve body off, it was all clean.
pulled both servos off. they were not stuck. both
bands were not tight. everything i think i could do
without dropping it i tried. STILL NO LUCK. still goes
back to 1st gear when i take it out of drive. locks in
reverse, goes into 1st in park and neutral. shifts
thru all forward gears just fine however.
