most folks are stuck; the only non-urban places where cable has any
competition around here, it's verizon 'fios' fiber, which isn't any
cheaper though it's probably more reliable.  us lucky few - and i
count myself very lucky - dwellers within shouting distance of the
phone plant can get dsl at bargain rates.  i pay $20/mo for 768k dsl
-and- internet phone; verizon + dialup was more than twice that.  oh,
and with the svc i get 2h of calling to anywhere in north america,
europe, and parts of the far east, and it's ~2.7c/min after that.
