I put 9x2.5" drum brakes on a 61 American (same as your 63 except body style) as my very first brake upgrade! I used backing plates and all from a 64 Classic six cylinder car. Bolted right on and gave near disc brake performance. I also put the slightly larger rear wheel cylinders in the American with the stock rear brakes. Of course I left the Classic wheel cylinders in the front brakes. I also switched to the Classic dual master cylinder. My 61 had the single "jelly jar" type.
