<snip> I told him that I might want to put an AMC 360 or 401 in my Gremlin one day. He said he could do it but it would be easier and cheaper to put a SBC in. <snip> Easier? There's going to be some fabrication to graft a SBC in a Gremlin. You didn't mention what engine is in it now. If it's a 304, a 360 or 401 will bolt right in. How much easier does it get? If it's currently a 6, the factory parts for a V8 swap are still out there. Again, no fabrication required. Cheaper? Granted, if you're looking for a good running engine to slam in you're Gremmie, it's more likely you'll trip over a decent SBC before a 360 or 401. If you're looking to start with a core and build your own engine, it will cost the same to build an AMC as is does a SBC. It sounds like you might be paying someone to do all the work, in which case you'll be paying the labour for fabrication to swap a SBC. Using an AMC will reduce labour costs which can be put towards a "more expensive" engine. Of coarse if you're after a modern fuel injected engine, you're kind of stuck with an expensive aftermarket system on a 360 or 401. Fuelie SBC's are a dime a dozen (I have 2 in my driveway), but why not a 4.0? These are quite plentiful still. You get the modern fuel and spark management system with a significant power increase as well. This would be a pretty simple swap as well. In the end, it's your car and you can do what you want with it, but don't let this mechanic convince you that a SBC is the best alternative simply because he's done it before. Look at all the options available and decide for yourself. Ross Blair 69 BBO Javelin 390 Ottawa, Ont. -- Get a Free E-mail Account at Mail.com!
