Funny part about all this is when I bought the car as a kid in 72, it would routinely do 18 mpg on the highway. By the early 80s after I'd rebuilt the carb, it dropped off to maybe 16 mpg on the highway. Remember these figures are with the slush box automatic in it. Then I put it away for 18 plus years. I really like your idea about the efficiency of the 304, I just can't understand why what should have helped improve mpg seems to have hurt it. I think I need to go through the ignition and stuff again like Jim suggested, I think my troubles are there somewhere. The engine is all original except that I took the heads off around 90,000 miles and had the valves reground because one exhaust was not sealing. That was 25 years ago, shortly after that I put the car away. Now it has 106,000.
