Seafoam and such will help, but the best thing to do is drop the gas tank, clean it out (brick cleaning acid works well, follow directions for cleaning brick, then follow w/soap and water, rinse well and let dry), THEN try some Seafoam or other product designed to clean the valves. You want something you can put in the oil as well as fuel -- I think Seafoam fits the bill. Otherwise they will just stick again when there is enough build-up. For the most part the residue is from old fuel in the tank being resurected by fresh fuel. Until the fuel system is clean the sticking can come back. To make darned sure they won't stick again pull the heads, disassemble, and clean everything. The valve stem seals are either gone or will be after a little running anyway, so if it's a car you plan on keeping having the heads rebuilt is a good idea. Alcohol in the fuel loosens the old residue a little faster than gas used to, I think that's why there seems to be a sudden rise in valve sticking in ol d cars that have sat for a long time. Could just be coincidence though. --------------- Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2007 20:45:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Raymon Hacking <duanehacking@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Tom thank you so much for your input! I didn't have any trans fluid handy so I sprayed a lot of wd40 in the intake and turned crank by hand many times today. When the little wife got home had her crank engine for me; and upon closer inspection noticed all rockers moving what appeared to be normal EXCEPT # 6...one rocker was moving at a "delayed" pace; not crisp movement...looked like it was in suspension the whole time it was moving...not closing all the way and not really opening all the way. Did another compression test and found all cylinders back up again except # 6. Dont know why the other 2 ( #4 and #5) came back up; but they did and they were at dead zero before. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
