" The XJ was available overseas with 2 different diesels. A VM and I don't
" recall the other (besides the crappy Renault version in the US)
they sold that 'crappy renault' up through '93 in eu; it was rated at
32mpg. the vm started in '94; i don't think there was a third diesel.
" I wish they
" had got together with Toyota to put diesels in Jeeps. I was looking at a 2LT
" today (up in Canada) with a version of the AW4 behind it. Didn't have my
" camera with me (next time I go up, I hope I'll have time to get some pics of
" these) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_L_engine) The 4 cyl turbo with
" auto overdrive would be excellent in an XJ.
i've been thinking along those lines myself, but with a stick. as far
as i can find out, the ax5 jeep used is the same internally as the
toyota g52; one input shaft and retainer swap later the 2LT bell would
bolt right on.
afaik the '2L-II' was an unofficial designation for later engines
[turbo included] but definitely the generation to seek out as they
fixed some problem early engines were prone to.
the 2LT manifolds and turbo will drop onto a larger 3L or 5L.
around here, you have to go with a same-year or newer engine for
swaps; the 2LTE normally has 7psi boost but can be jiggered up to 12
before the ecm starts throwing codes.
other possible swaps would be a toyota 1kz or 1kd; the a340/aw4 can
handle them but for a stick you'd probably need a r150/ax15 [similar
input shaft swap], not the littler 4cyl box. more modern, more power,
more efficiency.
yet another possible: volvo. they dropped the vw they were using and
started making their own about '00, and in their rwd cars they used
the aisin-warner 'a43' - which is guess what... they never brought
their diesel cars here, but the engine is available from volvo marine.
check the d3 series at
http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/na/en-us/marineengines/powerforleisureboats/diesel_inboard/
pity it's a 5 and not a 6 - but it weighs 475lb in marine trim.
and another candidate i haven't researched [much] yet: the 6sp stick
in the '03-4? 4.0 wrangler was a mercedes box. it has an integral
bell but likely there's a version that fits the om613 in the e320cdi.
this is a straight 6 with ~200hp, ~300 ft-lbs... last used in '05.
the mercedes/freightliner/dodge sprinter van that ups, fedex, and dhl
are so fond of has a sibling om612 5cyl with possibly the right
tranny. and btw this 5 weighs less than 460lbs, so it's not far off
the 4.0's ~430. i'll wager the 6 is in the 500lb area.
mercedes now has a 3.0 v6 and om628 4.0 v8 diesel - and if that 8
doesn't weigh anything over a 5.2/5.9 or hemi... there's a multiturbo
ver with 550 ft-lbs!
btw we follow california emissions specs here, which means new diesel
cars haven't been legally sellable - but the 'used' threshold is only
7500 miles, and they're legal...
