Good point! I remember some years having double wall exhaust pipes that
internally collapsed and looked fine on the outside! (undo the exhaust down
pipe and see how it runs)

Dave,
Is the exhaust plugged up? Is the timing right (ignition and
cam)? Did
you double check that the plug wires are connect properly?
The 327 will bolt right up to your current bellhousing. I think
those
engines are internally balanced as well so you can just swap the
flywheel over.
