Snip until the plant burned down about '52. afaik there was no other auto at the time. even army trucks [gmc built m135s] had them, along with rodder favorite 302 sixes. Snip Working strictly off memory which is failing and the head is tired, Borg Warner was supplying transmissions to Studebaker for 1950 or 51, the Ford-A-Matic and Mer-A-Matic was around for 1951 also, (Fords 1st automatic was 1941 but was recalled and all transmissions removed and replaced w/a 3 spd) The Buick Dynaflow had been around since about 1939 or so, The Chebbi powerglide was in use, I think the Kaiser was B/W and certainly Chrysler had some form of a full automatic and I think it was a 2speed. Packard's Uultramatic was around, but maybe not, I would have to check on that one, but it was a 2 speed with a lock up torque converter for high. And there were any number of semi-automatics floating around during those intervals. Yup, back in the day! Pontiac flat head straight eights, Olds flat head I-6 Chebbie splash lubrication along with the infamous Hudson, also with splash lubrication and a double wet clutch. Knee action front suspension, every one had trunions almost, There was still a lot of the low tech 30's mechanical stuff being packaged in all new and exciting body designs coming out of the Wurlitzer School of automotive design. Chrome, lots of chrome and good taste were synonymous, don't worry 'bout stopping them, we'll figure that out once we can get them to roll a bit. Of course you had the Muntz, the Edwards, the Davis, offerings from Crosely, some of which even had hydraulic brakes. Heady stuff then. The GM revenge on the Ford Flatty - the 302 GMC I-6 was a GMC Icon and it could be swapped into a Chebbie fairly easily complete if you wanted it with Hydramatic drive, but mostly those went with a close ratio LaSelle 3 speed. But for years the GMC walked to the beat of it's own drum using Pontiac V8s while the Chebbie had to use their own and powerglide. No big deal there though, they were developing a legend. But on a sultry summer night with the horizon obscured just a bit by the humidity if you listen carefully you can hear the old flat head I-6 walking and talking through the gears (of course it is overdrive) barking through a split manifold and a set of Smitties and a pair of echo cans tail dragen it's way through the by ways and highways of distant memories. Kinda pretty ain't it. John. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
