Another update on the 77 Gremlin. I got it registered this week, having been last registered in 2000. The VIN had been deleted from the DMV registry, so it was a simple matter to re-register with no back fees due. I had a police officer verify the VIN and fill out the verification paperwork. Here in Salinas, the Police Department sends a police auxilliary officer for such tasks after you pay a $20 fee at City Hall. I also submitted a statement of facts and a handwritten bill of sale signed by the seller. $48 later the car was registered in my name. I still have to get it smogged, but I have a temporary tag and 30 days to do that. Now to the grounds. I replaced the turn signal switch in the column. The Niehoff brand switch I bought at Kragen's looks to be good quality. I don't know where it is made. After installing it, I began getting intermittent functions of the right and left turn signals as well as the hazard flasher. I was dreading taking the column back apart, but I realized from some old posts that it is always wise to check for a proper ground. The body ground on the Gremlin is "accumulated" into one central ground on the firewall. I cleaned that connection thoroughly and so far my problems have gone away. I still need to replace the TS flasher but I have a couple of spare flashers from old wiring harnesses to test.
