My guess would be something akin to trying to drive a piston/rod out without getting the crank in the right position. Then gouging it with the rod bolt as he tried to drive it out. I would think the rings will be fine, but I would remove the pistons and inspect them. If he managed to toast the crank, I wouldn't trust the rings till I saw them and plus it allows them to get a fresh coat of oil. Afte $ years they could use fresh oil. I guess there is truth to the phrase "time is money"!!!
