i believe the prius packs are li-ion, but getting them could indeed be
a problem.  still, i've heard of prius owner/hackers doing it, modding
for extra all-electric range.

you don't have much of a ratio spread though.  .50:1 or even more
would be more useful than .70:1.  the planetary from an a/t maybe...
