The 77 TSM confirms that the SR-4 was available in 1977 and used behind all six cylinders. There was no four speed in 76, the last year of the Laycock-DeNormanville OD unit. The SR-4 replaced the OD unit. SR-4 was only used behind sixes in 1978 as well. The 1979 AMX with 304 used the SR-4 though. As Andrew Hay mentioned, it was marginal behind the V-8, and just about behind the 258 six. I drove a 79 Spirit with a worn out SR-4. It had just over 90K miles on it, and the trans was toast. Wouldn't stay in fourth gear, and it made LOTS of noise. So it was like a typical Chrylser 90s auto trans -- good for around 50K miles before it started needing work. It would outlast the warranty period on 95% of the cars it was installed in, and usually through the first owner. I guess that was considered enough.
