The .080" gap was found to be too hard on wires,caps and rotors and gap was decreased within a year or two of intro of the HEI systems. I thought they even put bulletins out on it. I remember reading about it in car Mags about reducing the gap.  I usually just put the gap right at .045" and let time and wear open it to .050" before replacing or regapping depending on my pocketbook and the vehicle at that time.
