No AMC experience (I'm a list lurker), but I once had a Cutlass of 1976
vintage that was equipped with HEI. Worked great for 160K miles, and was
still going when I let the car go in the early 90s.
It was a little peculiar in that with 45-50KV, the plugs ran a gap of
.080 and timing was 22BTDC. Plugs lasted forever, caps and rotors didn't
live all that long though compared to conventional. I found that if I
used AC caps/rotors, I got 15K out of them, el cheapo might not even
make 6000 miles. Never a fouled plug, ever.
I wouldn't expect any trouble, go for it.
