Markings up to about 1972 were stamped on the bolt flange of the cover.
You may have to look hard to find them after this long. If you're lucky
they were covered in oily dirt and preserved. Later they were stamped on
a flat spot of the centre section near where the axle tubes enter the
centre section. Viewed from the rear.

John, here is the codes taken from my catalog:
All 8 1/2 -inch axles had the axle code stamped on the differential 
cover
flange. The factory installed codes are as follows:
A.................3.53:1
B.................3.15:1
C.................2.87:1
D.................3.91:1
The following dealer installed rations were also available:
3.73:1; 3.91:1; 4.10:1; 4.44:1 5.00:1

Note: * 3.08 is the required axle ratio in the state of California on

This is about all I could get as for axle ratios standard & optional,
and those of Twin-Grip ratios that were dealer installed options at 
extra
cost. As far as axle codes I don't have that information at home with 
me, I do
however have several books at my shop that might yield that info. Hope 
this

The Chilton AMC book (not always reliable) says that 2.56:1 was used 
behind
'78 304s, with code X for open and Y for twin-grip.
My 73/78 parts catalog lists a rear axle assembly for 78 with 41:16 
ratio
(2.56:1), P/N 812-9358 for V8 equipped 01-40, but does not list the axle
code in the notes section, nor does it list a part number for the ring &
pinion set with this ratio.
FWIW, these are the ratios listed for the Model 20 in the 73/78 catalog:
Ratio Ring/pinion teeth Open code Twin-Grip code
3.91 43/11 N/A Q
3.54 39/11 A N
3.15 41/13 B P
2.87 43/15 C O
2.56 41/16 not listed N/A (Chilton claims 78 only, codes

I'd like to flesh this out, and perhaps post a web page listing
applications for each type, but I have only the 73/78 catalog. If anyone
has parts catalogs for other years and would be willing to scan or
photocopy the pages for Group 9 (just the text), please contact me off 
list
and I'll put it all together.

Eagle Axle Codes:
This code is stamped on the right-hand axle tube boss of the rear axle.
(boss means the flange thingy that the right side axle tube fits into.)
{Don't find it? Neither did I. I looked on the build sheet that I found
under the passenger seat, and behind the driver's door skin.}
E - 3.54 13/46
F - 3.08 13/40
J - 2.73 15/41
L - 2.35 17/40
All 7 9/16 inch ring gear diameter

According to Dick Datsons, book, the W supposedly means it's a 3.08 in a 
8
7/8 rear end. But I think it's supposed to be in the 7 9/16th axle, that
number, 3.08 appears as other codes as well, but as the little axle. 
Also,
for my 79 engine/tranny reference, I show that there was a 3.08 
available on
the 79 AMX with the 258 and automatic on the floor. Does this match your
car? Is your axle an amc 15 or 20?

Subject: Door tag decode? (find axle ratio)

Mark, the only way to find the axle ratio is to look at the
axle, it isn't on the door tag. There is a code stamped on
the right (passenger side) axle tube housing next to the
dowel hole (the large hole, in front). Take a wire brush and
wear goggles under the car! Codes are:
AMC15 AMC20
E - 3.58 A - 3.54
F - 3.08 B - 3.15
G - 3.31 C - 2.87
H - 2.73 D - 3.91
J - 2.37
What trans and engine did it have? I don't have a 73 TSM,
but the 72 lists as follows for the Hornet:
232/904 - 2.37 (2.73/3.08 optional)
232/T96 - 3.08 (3.31)
258/904 - 2.73 (3.08/3.31)
258/T14 - 3.08 (3.31)
304/998 - 2.87 (3.15)
360/727 - 2.87 (3.15)
And that's all!! No 360 three speed for anything, just a
T-10 four speed or 727 auto, and no manual for the 360
Hornet.
