" From: "Swygert, Francis G MSgt 436 CES/CECM" <Francis.Swygert3@xxxxxxxxxxxx> " " The .55 OD gear is probably NOT a good idea!! The engine wouldn't be " turning enough rpm to build any power, so 6th gear would be near useless " unless going down hill. With a diesel it might be better, but even they " need to turn a minimum rpm to produce power! Automotive diesels aren't " like the big stationary types that produce gobs of power at 1500-2000 " rpm -- with a redline of about 2200! true enough - but what if you [he] are running deep axle gears, like 4.10s or lower? otoh, i just read a long thread over on toyotadieselmadness started by someone who put a cummins b3.3 - a kubota sourced mill -not- related to the b3.9/5.9 - into his wrangler. somewhere in it he says he got better mileage at 2000 in 4th than at 1600 [the torque peak] in 5th. he said elsewhere that 2000 is where the turbo starts to come on; i wonder if that's related. [fyi the b3.3 redlines at 2600] btw he's -averaging- 30mpg with a best of 32, and very pleased with his swap. " -------------------------- " Jim, " " Do you have a link or any more information about the 6 speed automatic " to the AMC 6? That would be great with the 3.52 first gear and a .55 " or so 6th gear. With a good VW TDI, 40 mpg would be easy and with a " long bed 23.5 gallon tank I could fill up once a month or so. Even " better if I put a 20 gallon XJ tank in where the spare is. " " John Jackson why not use a toyota diesel with that toyota tranny? or maybe a volvo - they've made their own 5-cyl since about '00, available here as marine mills with 160 and 190 hp, and it was first used in cars with a 4sp aisin warner [sic] they call the a43. i wouldn't be surprised to find the 6sp they now use is the same a-w as the above toyota one. that would sure simplify adapting... ________________________________________________________________________ Andrew Hay the genius nature internet rambler is to see what all have seen adh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and think what none thought _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
