He used thin steel stock wrapped around the stud and cranked it down tight. It never wore out in the several years I knew of it being setup that way. In fact, the more I think of it, .010 shim stock carefully wrapped without wrinkling, cut for zero overlap on the final turn, then trimmed, would probably be 100% safe and wouldn't change torque. There would be some "air space" but since it's a taper that would compress out just fine. It'd be disposable basically.
