The main advantage to using a donor vehicle is you have all the
necessary bits and pieces right there, no running back to the salvage
yard just to look and see what needs to go where and why, or for that
part you missed. It's even better if it's running -- even if it's barely
running from wear. You can trouble shoot the system before transferring
it to its new home. Just make sure you trouble shoot the engine and know
it's running rough because of burnt valves, worn rings, etc., and the
EFI system checks out good. I've had a 2.5L four that would barely run
because the engine was so worn it had "out run" the adjustment
capabilities of the ECU. But the EFI system still functioned flawlessly.
The 2.5L TBI can be found on most 82-86 2.5L equipped cars. Mine was an
87 Pontiac 6000 (Chevy Celebrity, etc.). You need pre 87 because the 87
had a different engine block. Look for one with a distributor. The 87
car 2.5L had a distributorless ignition. I doubt it can be made to work
without a new chip, and the ECU might be different than distro models.
S-10 trucks are the best source for any size TBI -- anything from the
2.5L all the way up to a 4.3L was used in those, and they used the
distributor longer on the four -- I think through 1989. Pick up a Haynes
S-10 book covering mid 80s models and you should be all set!

Hi John,
I expect to be around $1500.00 when I'm done. I'm not sure how much
cheaper it'd be to get a donor vehicle as a $1500 to $2000 donor these
days (at least around here) will get you a neglected POS, _but_ as you
stated it would be the most reliable method since you'd more than likely
have a complete setup regardless of condition. That would definitely
save you time scrounging for parts. Procuring a complete donor would be
my first choice if I had room - see below. My first choice for a donor
would be a wrecked Liberty CRD, second being a Cherokee or Wrangler 4.0.
