Jeff. Snip Can Frank S. or anyone else out there do a small info-mercial on York compressors and clutches for V8 and I6? Snip I would be interested in helping here as I have a feeling that there is a lot of unknown information in this area. When I rebuilt my Spirit I thought I understood the basic information and maybe I did 'cause I had problems and was able to diagnose and fix them. How some ever, I destroyed a compressor 'cause I did not realize that it carried it's own oil supply in the crank case. I thought the thing was lubricated by the oil in suspension in the freon. . The later rotorary types are I think, but not the old Yorks. Of course when everything came to pass Murphy's Law kicked in and the compressor clutch configuration used on the Spirit was made of unobtainium. Here in the valley of the sun A/C is mandatory, at least for me anyway. This was not a cheap repair either. First comment. I believe you are correct for the most part in the comment on smog pump applications or not. But on the I-6 engines it gets really strange as to whether Power Steering, Smog Pump and Alternator are used individually or all together. Of course this also changes from year to year too. Not sure how that affects the A/C compressor part number or not, but it will give you fits as to whether you have one or two grooves on the pulley. On my Spirit, the A/C compressor drives the Alternator. I also have a couple of spare parts compressors on the shelf. Both cars under restoration are A/C equipped cars too but one of them is the really nifty AM Air dealer installed units.
