I've used cheap "rattle can" spray paint to "dye" carpet. The paint is
so thin the carpet sucks it right up. It will stiffen the carpet
slightly, but not enough to worry about. Use several thin coats, and
I've never used more than three. After that it starts to stiffen a good
bit, though well used areas will loosen back up.  

This is just a band-aide fix though. It will give you a year or two of
better looking carpet. For an everyday use car you may as well bite the
bullet and order new, you'll need it in a year or so anyway, but for a
garage kept weekend car you may get 2-5 years out of it.
