Yeah that is weird.........but then again ford has been offering up
parts
for AMCs as production pieces ...example starters....so what the heck.
------------------------------
Part of this parts interchangeability is that AMC bought a few parts
from Ford owned suppliers (such as Autolite -- starters and other
electrical components), but some parts are from suppliers that also
supplied Ford -- like Bendix brakes. Don't assume that because AMC uses
a part that's also available for "big three" products that it was made
by one of them. Sometimes the part comes from a third party supplier.
Universal joints is another one -- Dana-Spicer made a lot of U-joints
for all manufacturers. In many case a manufacturer picks a product
that's already in production when it fits the bill -- much more cost
effective than having a custom made part in most cases. When contracting
to buy a very large number there's probably no difference, of course.
