Re: [Amc-list] BRAKES AT COST (hi-tech disc brakes)

What Anthony is referring to is an Aerospace kit for 68-74 Javelin/AMX cars. http://www.aerospacecomponents.com/pro_street_kits.htm is the direct link. I believe you can get either the Pro Street or the GT (the main difference is the type of rotor -- the hubs shown are different but are most likely for different makes), but I don't think they make a rear brake kit for AMCs.

These kits come with four piston calipers, new hubs, and rotors. The rotors are replaceable without changing the hubs. The hubs fit all drum brake spindles from 1950 on, 1965-70 Bendix four piston spindles, 1971-74 Kelsey-Hayes caliper spindles, and all 1979-83 spindles. Since the disc brake spindles are thinner where they mount to the steering knuckle a spacer may be required for the Aerospace caliper adapters. Not sure how thick the spacer needs to be -- maybe as much as 1/2". A set of 1/2" GRADE 5 or 8 nuts will slip over the 3/8" GRADE 8 mounting bolts and are about 1/2" thick. GRADE 5 or 8 washers can be used also. The spacer pieces MUST be graded -- common un-graded parts vary in thickness and hardness, graded pieces will be uniform.

All the above spindles use the same bearing set. 75-78 disc brakes (Big 3.1" and Small 2.6" Bendix) use a larger bearing and therefore a different spindle. That's why 77-78 rotors are more expensive than later models.

The Aerospace rotors are 11.75" in diameter, stock AMC rotors are 10.82"
(77-83 -- 71-74 K-H are 11", 75-76 Big Bendix 10.75", 65-70 Bendix 4-Piston 11.1875" solid, all others ventilated). 15" aftermarket wheels are recommended with the Aerospace rotors, but 14" and 15" stock type steel wheels fit with 3/8-1/2" spacers. The Magnums (and most factory steel wheels) use the same center section! The 15" rim has a lip inside that the caliper hits. Repro Magnums are the same. Aerospace may have an 11" rotor available, check!
