This is a good bit off topic -- Evinrude outboards -- but I'm going to respond to the list since it is engine technology. The oil is injected. It does have an engine oil tank, but no sump. I've got a little experience with oil injected engines -- used to run Suzuki two-stroke street bikes with it, so it's not exactly new technology. The last two-stroke street bikes in the US were sold in 1976, so the bikes were a bit old when I ran them. Had a 305, 250, and 500 (in that order). Oil is injected in the ball or roller bearings and bore, then picked up by the fuel charge as it passes through the crankcase. This burns less oil and provides better lubrication by placing the oil directly where it's most needed. I always thought it was pretty cool! No oil mixing, just keep the separate oil tank full of two-cycle oil. I miss that GT500A! replaced it with a GS1000G, which I still have. The 500 was quicker from 0-70, but it had been bored out .030" (due to a cracked ring scratching the bore), and the pistons "notched" where they lined up with the ports about 1/8". On a piston port two-stroke (the piston covers ports in the bore as it goes up and down -- basically the piston is a valve also) notching the piston is the same as putting in a bigger cam. I had a Honda 650 four cylinder pull up beside me once, look over at the 500 and twin pipes and grin, then take off. I let him get a couple bike lengths ahead then blew past him like he was sitting still. I looked over at the next light and grinned at him -- he ignored me and just slowly took off at the next light... That was one fun bike! Parts were getting to hard to find -- the capacitor went out in the ignition (CD type) and would have been expensive to replace. Sold it as a spare to another guy who was racing a GT500A. He ended up putting his ignition on my bike because of the piston mods. ------------------- Date: Wednesday, February 21, 2007 03:50 PM From: Peter Marano <PMarano@xxxxxxxxx> The E-Tec is a 2 stroke cycle engine, I suppose the oil is injected. The fuel injection is the interesting feature. It modulates the droplet size for smoother, cleaner idle and piston cooling at high output levels.
