I can attest to that; I brought the stainless on my hornet up
to near-new with steel wool (0 or 00 or 000) before I installed
it. It worked great.
Dents, I don't know, but I have seen someone advertising in some
AMC newsletter or maybe AIM (AMC) that does that as a service.
