VIN says it just a Spirit DL in AMX's clothing.

Does "3" or "5" matter?? $7200 for -that- 1968 Camaro convertible??

Why not a buy-it-now 1970 AMX/3 for, oh, let's say, under ten grand?

(Which, BTW, P.T. never said; Hannum did...)

Oh wait, it's the only '80 AMX factory-built with a 304? And it has the highly desirable high-rise, Holley hidden wiper motor, too? Never mind.

Pass the plate to buy. Our minds are blown!

Holes-in-the-head? Cats-in-the-cowl? Yowl.

But seriously, turn brain on to "coil decal" and let the electrons flow:

such unobtanium-age suppliers might have some OEM decals gathering dust.

And depending on whether for box or canister,

it may be possible to adapt an alternate one.

Racing decals come in a range of sizes. So who'd know? Or who'd tell?

Never hurts to be a little creative --- after all that's how AMC began.

And it's not as if you need a missing silver eagle-and-shield ornament.

For the car whose story -ended- on a February 3rd.

(It's excerpted below for any who are interested.)

And the AMC story that -began- on a February 5th?

That you had a long, cold weekend to think about?

"When Mr. Wilson left office, he purchased the Model 48 directly from the Pierce-Arrow Company--the White House had leased the car. The Model 48 looked quite similar to the previous models, but there were a few notable differences. The earlier models had cowl lights that were not necessary on the newer model because the headlamps contained a second light. Under the hood, in addition to having dual intake and exhaust valves for each cylinder, the 466-cubic inch engine received new Delco dual distributors. Perhaps because the Model 48's dual-valve six ran cooler than the prewar six, the ventilators that were on top of the hood could be dispensed with and the smooth hood appeared. The new radiator core was changed to hexagonal tubes. Inside the car, the dashboard was redesigned as a one-piece instrument panel built integrally with the body. The hopelessly outmoded bulb horn was no longer mounted on the steering column, and only the Klaxon horn was used.

Mr. Wilson's Pierce-Arrow is also equipped with Westinghouse air shock absorbers to help give the car its easy smooth ride. The limousine has right-hand drive, but the spare tire pockets are also on the right side blocking the door. Pierce-Arrow was one of the last American manufacturers to abandon right-hand drive.
The Presidential Model 48 has a well-furnished instrument panel with a clock, speedometer with both trip and total odometer, ammeter, fuel pressure and oil gauges. In addition, a power take off on the transmission can be engaged to operate a compressor for inflating tires. The well-appointed closed body has a roll-up glass partition to separate the driver from the passengers. The spacious passenger compartment is upholstered with pinstriped broadcloth, and there are two jump seats to accommodate additional passengers. The windows have silk shades, and there are curtains that can be drawn over the interior partition window. The limousine also has German silver sconce carriage lights mounted beside the passenger doors and the door handles are silver-plated. The radiator cover is German silver with a presidential eagle and shield radiator ornament. After Mr. Wilson retired, the eagle was replaced with a Princeton tiger, and the presidential seal on the doors were painted over an
d replaced with Woodrow Wilson's monogram.

During Wilson's last years, the Model 48 limousine provided mobility while he was infirm. The president had collapsed on September 25, 1919, during one of his vigorous campaigns to gain support for the League of Nations, and then, on October 2, he suffered a paralytic stroke which completely incapacitated him until November. His wife Edith served as unofficial presidential aide while he was convalescing because she was the most knowledgeable about the President's activities and correspondences.

After the President left office and retired, the car gave him freedom of movement as his chauffeur George Howard would take him for his daily ride. Mr. Wilson even had a buzzer installed to simplify communication with the driver--one buzz to stop, two to turn left, and three to turn right. Wilson was an avid baseball fan so he arranged to have the car parked at the edge of Griffith Stadium's ball field to watch the Washington Senators play. Clark Griffith, owner of the Senators explained, 'He was a sick man, so he'd remain in his limousine, parked along the right field line. We'd detail a reserve catcher to sit on the front fender to ward off line drives.'"

You know what line drives do to cast aluminum....

(Whether or not they're fueled by BALCO)

Woodrow Wilson died February 3, 1924. He never rode in that P-A again.

BTW, that Presidential ornament, which would have been unobtanium after the Pierce-Arrow Company itself died fourteen years later, was found in a garage on S Street. Car lovers' caches (like Gremlingts's) can prove priceless. Sometimes, it just takes time.

Time to forget?

Time to recall!

Thomas Jeffery was born on February 5, 1845.

Something that real AMC people need to know.

Including those who ignore pre-Rambler info.

All AMC people should thank those who don't.

Without their work, AMC eagles will be gone.

Lost in a garage of memory and passing time.
