Bob, I'm up late tonight so I'll take a shot at answering your question. First let's consider things to look for in the body: Very few body and trim parts are available as NOS or reproductions, so rust in the front fenders, roof, glass channels, or anywhere in the rear above the lower rear quarters is serious on a 74 AMX. It's serious because you will need to find factory sheet metal (donor car or parts) to properly patch it. Patch panels are available for the lower rear quarters and for sections of the floor. Interior dash and trim pieces show up on Ebay and may be available used or NOW from vendors. NOS interior fabrics are available, though expensive, from a couple of vendors. Carpet kits are common. Side glass and the rear window have to be purchased used, but are available. New windshields are commonly seen on Ebay. AMX grilles and the grille bucket behind the screen are available used, but are getting scarce I think. Mechanicals: The front and rear suspension wear parts (ball joints, shocks, tie rod ends, spring bushings with the exception of the front spring seats are available. Front spring seats can be reconditioned and there have been posts here on the list about how to do that. Engine, transmission, and rear end parts are fairly commonly available and the reconditioning costs for these parts are typcial for 70s era cars from any manufacturer. A lot of the credit for their availability goes to the fact that the power train was used in thousands of Jeeps. I reconditioned (not really restored) a low mileage 73 Javelin last year, so I speak from some experience. Drive the car if you can and listen for noises in the front suspension and feel for "play" in the steering which can be caused by worn ball joints, tie rod ends, strut rod bushings, or spring seats. Noise or a "clunk" in the driveline is commonly cause by a worn or collapsed transmission mount. Doors that don't close or creak when they are moved (or sag on the door bolts) are caused by worn hinge bushings. Good luck with your candidate.
