How many times have you said a few unsavory words about the half paper, half foil tube that runs from the snout of the factory air cleaner to that annoying tin shield that wraps around the exhaust manifold? How many have you removed and tossed in the corner or worse the trash?

Once upon a time in nineteen hundred and seventy-seven, back before global warming, I had the misfortune to be chosen for a mission to the great outdoors of Northwestern Illinois in the dead of winter. My mission was to hunt down the company wrecker and help the operator with a call that was taking too long. We had calls stacked up for the wrecker and could wait no longer.

He was on the crest of a hill just outside of Baileyville on Montague Road. A full milk truck was stuck in a snow drift and for some reason couldn't get out even with the wreckers assistance. With plates down, two and half inch cleats digging in to the roadway, the wrecker still couldn't pull the truck from the snow.

The fiberglass nose of the truck was leaned forward and the air cleaner was half on, half off. I watched as the wrecker once more tried to move the truck and I noticed that the carburetor was not following the movement of the throttle. I gave the stop signal and brought Marv, the wrecker operator and Marv, the milk truck driver together under the hood. First we're going to put this air cleaner back together, complete with warm air supply tube, then we're going to close the hood and let the truck run for five or ten minutes, then we'll try again. We completed the tasks in short order and went to our vehicles to get warmed up. Several minutes later the milk truck, with very little help from the wrecker, drove out of the drift. The throttle plates has frozen to the bores and since the truck had a govenor throttle movement was normal, but throttle plate movement wasn't. A few minutes of heat from the exhaust manifold, with the hood closed warmed up the carburetor allowing!
  the th
rottle plates to come off idle.

Oh, I forgot to mention, the temperature was around -25°F with sustained winds of 45 mph, wind chill negative 100°F. When we returned to the garage the boss had trimmed his list of service calls to those that were actually out in the weather. Those that were at home with cars that wouldn't start were told they were the lucky ones and to stay home. Not all his decistion, the Illinois State Police had issued orders that put their wrecker needs at the top, safety was the order of the day.

AMC content - I noticed that my 1970 Hornet doesn't have warm air to the carburetor from the manifold, just an open snout to engine compartment. Good thing I let her rest in the garage over winter.

Jack

Oh yeah!

While it's most unlikely, let's say, that Los Angeles will see
-100F wind chill, it sure takes a long time to warm up the big
fat chunk of 258 under the hood. I don't get usable heat for
about 10 minutes!

I adapted an 80's Concord/Eagle airbox to the top of my Weber
32/36 DGEV (easy) and plan on running hot air up from the
manifold into it. (The later ones have big rectangular snorkels,
instead of the little 2" round the older cars got.)

That's not the whole reason for the airbox add; the main reason
is I arranged to point the snorkel of the airbox right at the
chunk of sheet metal to the right of the radiator (looking from
the front of the car with the hood open) that will have direct
access to cold, outside air once I chop out a 4" x 3" section
of it (I'll add a tube or duct). No more sucking under-hood air
that's too hot to be cold for power, and too cold to be hot for
warmup. Besides, the Weber sucking air was easily the noisiest
thing under the hood!

Newbie here. Been lurking a while and thought I would join to ask my
question directly since I have been unable to find any answers by
searching around. I have a 1978 Jeep Wagoneer.

I installed the Edelbrock Proflow MPFI in my 401. Have not fired it
yet, but am close. Anyone else do this modification. I may have a few
Qs once I get to the tuning. Thanks.

I don't think it's the same thing Tom. The maintenance timer I pulled
from a 87 Jeep Comanche was a gear driven unit, looked a lot like a
small battery powered clock. I think that's what he's looking for. I
threw it in a parts box since the vehicle had a little over 50K on the
clock, but it's no where near. The junkyard should be full of them --
87-90 Renix system Jeeps use them, and I believe GM cars with carbs and
computers (pre OBD) use them as well. AMC sourced most emission controls
from GM or GM suppliers.

What's wrong with a junkyard?

The part is amusing; it seems to be a common fuze for bombs also.
Tourists (I think that's how it's currently spelled) use them.

It's basically a chemical device, like a tube with metal and
an electrolyte, that moves metal from one end to the other by
passin current through it; like a little electroplating thing,
or the opposite of a battery.

"Elapsed time" meters for things like xerox copiers use 'em;
for that app they look like a little mercury thermometer.

IIRC the timer would trip at 80K so if it was available a clock with 50K on it would be good for another 30K +-. That being said IRC they did nothing but trigger that stupid light in Cherokees. However IIRC they would put the ECU in stepper carbed AMC's into lean mod and they would run like crap till replaced. The AMC's used a slide in ciruit board that operated off of key on hours so they tripped due to run time not mileage. I got into a big argument over one years ago when a service writer wanted me to sell a carb overhaul and major tuneup to guy who just needed the board replaced. I never thought about what one would do about the old systems now that parts are likely not available? Nutter bypass?
I don't think all years of the stepper carbed AMC's had the light and board. I think it was quickly disscarded as a bad idea. Sort of like when they said to do a maintenance replacement of O2 sensors at 50K and the EPA told them they had to cover them under the 5-50 warranty! They soon decided that O2 sensors did not realy need replaced! Yeah, I still try to swap mine out by 80K or so to keep them in peak working order. They slow down as they age. Sort of like us!

My stepper carb 1980 Pacer has a resettable timer that is in the
speedometer cable. At least, it was once resettable; I think it's
broken, so I pulled it out. I'll take it apart someday. IIRC, all
it does is to light the lamp (which someone had long since pulled).

My '80 Spirit and AMX also had a reset-able device in the speedometer
cable. It is a cylindrical affair and plugs into the speedometer cable
just below the Master Cylinder. The only function it performs is to turn
on the Check Engine light. It is mounted somewhat the same way that
speed sensors for factory cruise controls are mounted which means you
have a 2 piece speedometer cable. This was also the location that was
used to install the speed sensor for the Mopar Retrofit fuel injection
system that is installed on the Spirit.
