T'was the morning after XRmas...
Twas the fine morning after
that great holiday
where people give gifts
and bow heads to pray
In thanks for the child
who's life was our gift
to deliver us from evil
(and not miss a quick shift)
That having been said,
our man of the hour,
Ol Jolly Saint Nick
who delivered thru powder.
Bursting thru heaven
and driving like hell,
he delivered his goods
and all turned out well.
Back home now in slippers
sipping piping hot cider,
he munched on some snacks
groaning " I'm gonna get wider".
The post-season news
was just coming in
and all Santa could do
was shake head and grin.
The reindeer were found
at some posh party distillin'
fine pickled eggnog
with some chick named P. Hilton
The Elves were invited
to California, a show
with some guy named Phil
'bout their phobia of snow
The Mrs. had gone south
to a sunny rehab
making tan lines in Aruba
and gettin' rid of some flab.
Santa was just chillin'
after a wild ride that night
no doubt he'd made history
with that historic flight.
The Eagle had soared
and pulled straight and true
while the Gremlin XR
had sure paid it's dues.
The landings were tricky
with brakes notoriously fickle
even with those torque links
he barely missed the Grim sickle.
But he mastered that beast
and drove it all night
til it dropped him home safely
from that hair-raising flight.
He'd motored it past
all the elves, cheering wildly
as he'd broken speed records
and that's putting it mildly!
He'd pulled into his garage
and finally turned off the key.
The motors went silent
and ol' Santa had to pee!
With a bow of his head
he'd prayed with much love
for making it thru
with that help from above.
Now a few hours later
he was feeling quite toasty
the cider had kicked in
and his cheeks were all rosy
He sauntered outdoors
down the pathway dim lit
to his favorite garage
where the XR did sit.
The door flew wide open
as Santa gazed merrily
upon his red-hot lil Gremlin
and then sighed, Oh verily
What am I to do
with this car so bare tamed
with a motor so hot
he'd almost gone down in flames?
It wasn't it's fault
it was so devilishly fast
but he'd prayed every hour
thinking it might be his last.
He gazed and he pondered
then with a final weary sigh
he pulled on the cover
and looked to the sky.
"Oh Lord, I don't know
the fate of this car,
if only I could see
by the light of your star.
To guide me thru heaven
was a task quite forbidding
I'm not sure next year
my heart could take thrilling.
So I leave it to you
to show me the way
if it's needed once more
as old Santa's sleigh."
So one last look upon
that wild child, now still.
He silently bade goodnight
'til next year's good will.
And after closing the door,
and walking up to his castle
thought "I'd better call Haggerty,
if I wreck it'll be a hassle!"

It's true that gasohol isn't new. If it is the plastic tank
lining goo melting, it could be other unholy crap they are
putting in the gas. The MTBE story is a horror; it's amazing
it got used.
Also something is eating old fuel lines, in addition to age. But
a car tank made in the 1980's getting eaten, that's weird.

Keith,
You may want to check that the light switch has a good ground. I'm not
sure if there are other grounds our not (there is a 1966 wiring diagram
on my site in the Technical Information section that's probably pretty
close to what you have). Also, dust build up inside the instrument panel
and on the bulbs will make things dim as well.

I tend to agree with John. 10% ethanol shouldn't affect fiberglass gelcoat. E-85 might, but E-10 will not.
This does seem like something either in the tank or fuel causing this problem. Might be time to invest in a locking gas cap -- maybe someone did put something in the tank. If not, you can pull the tabk, wash it out with warm water and soap, then let it dry and wash out again. Hirsch tank liner is alcohol proof, so you can use that. You just pour it in and slosh it around. It will line fiberglass tanks also. There's more than one kind of resiin used in boats. Polyester is the cheaper stuff found in most auto parts stores. I don't think it likes alcohol. I believe the higher priced resin is alcohol resistant -- but I might have that backwards. I know of at least one boat owner with a fiberglass tank who lined with the Hirsch stuff and has had no problem after a couple years. He brushed it on rather than sloshing around (hard to slosh a boat around -- tank is built in -- he cut the top out and painted the inside). www.hirschauto.com.

Also, it's very unlikely that any recent street car would have a
fiberglass gas tank from the factory. Gas tanks are supposed to stay
intact in crashes (which is most likely why the OEM's are using plastic
tanks now) and I just don't see how a fiberglass tank would hold up.

Here in Spokane, WA there is a guy that owns a Zips restaurant (fast food) and he has a veggie diesel truck. He used to have to pay to have his waste cooking oil disposed of, now he uses it to fuel his truck. He has a decal on the tailgate that says fueled by french fry oil or something like that.

Recently I was going on about MegaSquirt systems, here's what we got
running just a few minutes ago:
Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited with a fully built mopar 360 (the stock
engine lasted 1 day boosted), Giant T4 turbo. It was limited to 5 pounds
of boost with the factory computer that had been band-aid fixed. It had
run a 12.7 in the 1/4 and put just shy of 600 hp through all 4 tires to
the dyno with that config.
It's running solely on the MegaSquirt now and we are doing fuel/ignition
maps for up to 10 pounds of boost. We are still using the factory
computer to shift the transmission (he didn't want to pay for a second
controller) I'll post some pics and videos to my site in the next day or
two. Ever seen violent 4 wheel burnouts? LOL

Armand,
You are correct, Cordova, IL is located north of the Quad Cities, along
the Mississippi River. The Cordova Dragway Park is just north of Cordova,
IL on RT.#84. The track is right along the highway where you can actually
see them racing if you are driving by!

BTW, Cordova Dragway Park has switched from being an IHRA track to a NHRA
track starting 1-1-07.
