Hot Rod magazine has an archive issue out (dated Fall
2006 I think) which is basically a venue for
publishing photos from the Hot Rod archives. Near the
back of the magazine AMC cars are pictured. Some of
the pics appear to be publicity shots from AMC
literature. There is one picture taken by Terry Cook
in Detroit in 1969 which shows a number of white AMXs
in a huge warehouse or factory. The caption indicates
that these cars might be a batch sent to Hurst to be
treated to the SS/AMX conversion. Interesting photo
but is is small.

I had the transmission of my daughters 83 Spirit (258,
auto) rebuilt in Aug 05. In Jul 06 it had to be
rebuilt again (under warranty). It failed again a
week ago with less than 7K since the initial rebuild.
THe tranny guy is trying to blame it on a bad flexpate
(even though he can't detect any warpage. A new one
is $120. plus he's charging me another $297. for the
rebuild kit and telling me he's doing me a great favor
cause the warranty (1 yr, 12K) has expired. I called
the local machine shop and they said if the engine is
internally balanced they can check the flex plate but
if it's externally balanced they can't. I plan on
having the old flex plate checked (if possible) and,
if it's ok I will be doing what it takes to get my
money for the rebuild refunded. The guy at the
machine shop seemed very skeptical that the flex plate
on an auto would cause the tranny to go. Comments?
Is the 258 internally or externally balanced? Thanks.
Marty

I'm also interested in these same decals, especially the '68 tachometer. An
AMC guru friends suggested NOT doing the '68 tach, due to the seller's
"instructions to make it easier to apply the decal...." What about
potential bubbling and breaking the tach needle?

Ebay has a seller offering decals to make your dash gauges for a 70 AMX or
Javelin look like new.
Has anyone on the list bought or seen the decals and is willing to comment
on their quality?
Don

IIRC the return line started with the 1975 models.

The AMC Six is internally balanced; the flex plate has no
weights unless it was mistakenly taken froma V8 donor car
(in which case you simply knock offf the weights).

Even if unbalanced, with the mass of the torque converter
attached, I would be very skeptical if it could shake apart a
904/998/999 Torqueflite! Dubious! Dubious!

The 904 family is a FINE, SOLID, RELIABLE, NO-BRAINER
transmission. There's nothing weird or delicate about it.
They rebuild fine and run forever assuming you don't abuse
it, keep it cool and full of fluid. Should run for 150K+ per
rebuild, and just get leaky and maybe slippy with extreme old
age, not do anything stupid like break.

The most common assembly problem is not engaging all three
splined/slotted shafts in the torque converter, in which case
it will leak in short order. But that's an amateur's problem,
not a pro rebuilder issue.

Sounds like an incompetant rebuilder, unfortunately.

For some reason,after reading Nicks'
post, I began hearing: 'The New Bitch' by ....: marilyn manson ?...
........? use your FREE Shareaza .pgm to download the music video
if you're wondering ......

This is the 'X' block - that 'doesn't exist' - no one has
actually seen one - and lived to remembered where they'd
even saw it, ever -

"Holy Grail" - "Block - 0h - Goal" - "No 'f'***in Way" -
the whisperings 'X' block lore breatheren ...@ .050" lift -

If it IS the real deal - > :

like Unicorns and Mermaids,
it's Fate is now terribly sealed:
remember what happened to 'Charley the Tuna' ?

It would make a Fantastic Magazine Article - as this is
THE center of AMC engine 'Lore' - at very least, it should
be Digitally Documented and Ultra-Sonic 'd Documented before ........
well, ........ you know.....

Once word gets out, the 'Buzz' in the Forums - like the
'BULLTEAR' site,[soo-wee what an Image that conjurs
Martha!]

it may eventually be sold to the highest bidder -
with the least credentials -

he'll send it out to be *BUILT* - ......for his
weekend rock crawler - "with 'The Biggest' pistons
ya' ever zeen"...erRRP@!! "yEAhBaBY...... tHAts'
tHe BeAST@!">,,,"we machined the PISS outa' er!...."

kinda' like Caesar in old'n days,
where he got to knock boots with the Brides before ..... well,
you know ..... .

Once it hits the machinist - it's just another 401 - right
now ? it is THE ULTIMATE Turbo cylinder block - with
the 3.750 cylinder walls AND Thick main webbing, but
that will be overlooked by the less technical.

It'll serve as a weekend mudder 'Trophy' motor - until it loses oil
pressure and
'windows' the block - ,

see duty as a 'Shop Lamp' , being wired up & placed on
a stand by the Kelvinator beer keep - where actually, it should
Begin a notable Retirement unfettered right now -
but life is cruel - especially when 'Bragging Rites' are involved.

In a perfect world, it should be displayed in a glass case in an
AMC Racing Museum! - but that will never happen.

Maybe Larry Daum would buy it & keep it pristine next to that
Aluminum AMC Indy V8 motor - keeper of the Flame !

OK > one chance to hear from each of you on what YOU would do with
the:
'Mythical 401x Race Only Cylinder Block' - should YOU ever posess it
in its' current 'unmolested' condition !

Anyone have any information on a 401 block with an X
above the displacement casting and only a 3.750 bore.
There is also 401 cast into the intake valley. It has
very large water jackets and splayed main caps. It
might have been an endurance engine for one of the
racing sanctions with a long stroke and small bore.

Thanks,
