Near the back of the magazine AMC cars are pictured. Some of the pics appear to be publicity shots from AMC literature. There is one picture taken by Terry Cook in Detroit in 1969 which shows a number of white AMXs in a huge warehouse or factory. The caption indicates that these cars might be a batch sent to Hurst to be treated to the SS/AMX conversion. Interesting photo but is is small. In Jul 06 it had to be rebuilt again (under warranty). It failed again a week ago with less than 7K since the initial rebuild. THe tranny guy is trying to blame it on a bad flexpate (even though he can't detect any warpage. A new one is $120. plus he's charging me another $297. for the rebuild kit and telling me he's doing me a great favor cause the warranty (1 yr, 12K) has expired. I called the local machine shop and they said if the engine is internally balanced they can check the flex plate but if it's externally balanced they can't. I plan on having the old flex plate checked (if possible) and, if it's ok I will be doing what it takes to get my money for the rebuild refunded. The guy at the machine shop seemed very skeptical that the flex plate on an auto would cause the tranny to go. Comments? Is the 258 internally or externally balanced? Thanks. An AMC guru friends suggested NOT doing the '68 tach, due to the seller's "instructions to make it easier to apply the decal...." What about potential bubbling and breaking the tach needle? Thanks. The AMC Six is internally balanced; the flex plate has no weights unless it was mistakenly taken froma V8 donor car (in which case you simply knock offf the weights). Even if unbalanced, with the mass of the torque converter attached, I would be very skeptical if it could shake apart a 904/998/999 Torqueflite! Dubious! Dubious! The 904 family is a FINE, SOLID, RELIABLE, NO-BRAINER transmission. There's nothing weird or delicate about it. They rebuild fine and run forever assuming you don't abuse it, keep it cool and full of fluid. Should run for 150K+ per rebuild, and just get leaky and maybe slippy with extreme old age, not do anything stupid like break. The most common assembly problem is not engaging all three splined/slotted shafts in the torque converter, in which case it will leak in short order. But that's an amateur's problem, not a pro rebuilder issue. Sounds like an incompetant rebuilder, unfortunately. ------------------------------ Message: 8 Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2006 06:06:20 -0500 From: "Brien Tourville" <hh7x@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] 401X Race Block: "If she were MY daughter..." There is also 401 cast into the intake valley. It has very large water jackets and splayed main caps.
