The issues are size, wiring, need. If you put the 140 amp alternator on, I'd suggest a GM one wire to keep it simple. It should adapt fairly easily. If you don't need it it won't produce 140 amps. Cabling needs to be sized to carry that kind of amperage, fuses are also needed to keep things safe. A lot of people put big alternators on and they don't need them. They are simply spending money. If your system does not draw a heavy enough load, the alternator doesn't put out the max amperage. Biggest mistake is to instal one of these, need it and have the wiring undersized! poof! No more car! On the flip side, I heard tell of a guy who knew how to setup an alternator to put out 110 and since his heater core was gone. He mounted a second alternator wired for the 110 output and installed an electric heater! It placed so much load on the little six that the engine would stall when he turned the heater on. He then mounted a throttle hand control to pull when he was running the heater! Most of the bearings are standard types available through a bearing and drive supply. You'll need the numbers off the bearings, so can't order until you pull them out. I got parts for a T-96, including a new cluster gear and hard to find input shaft for the heavy duty "J" model (only AMC used it, two years only!), from All-Trans in Greenville, SC (http://www.alltransparts.com/). They specialize in manual transmissions. It's hard to order anything but run-of-the-mill parts through a chain car parts store. You have to go to specialty dealers, or try the privately owned places. Of the chains, only NAPA usually has competent people. I don't mean that as a slam for any of you who work in parts stores -- there are exceptions! Examine your co-workers/help... About your torque tube... Tom said something interesting! You have an unusual axle, so it's quite possible the shaft inside the tube is a heavy duty variety also. Check your TSM first, the older models may not have had a center bearing. But I have a question -- was the shaft a solid metal rod 1-1.5" in diameter, or was it a larger diameter (2" or more) tubular shaft? If tubular that's why no center bearing. A tubular shaft is more flex resistant. If by chance it's solid, look around the center of the shaft for two grooves about 1/16" deep all the way around the shaft. Those would be for lock rings and indicate that it did have a bearing at one time. It's possible that a bad bearing was removed -- a little vibration at speed would have been better than a very noisy bearing all the time. Damn right!, unless you really need the capacity, and have massively rewired for it, it will be at least a waste, and at worst, a burned-up wiring harness. You stick a 100+ amp alternator in, it works fine, no problems for a year or two. Let's say one morning you find you left the lights on all night. Battery is dead, dead, dead, won't turn over. You get a jump start, starts up, you run fast-idle to charge up your battery with your huge alternator. 15 minutes later you have smoke, and a melted harness. The reason is, an alternator dumping 70, 80, 90, ... 140 amps into the battery will melt the (approx.) 12-gauge wire the factory installed with that original 37-amp Motorola. You need 4-gauge, or better, for 140 amps, and crimp connectors and such o match. Those are NOT conservative numbers for the sake of argument; they're actually on the small side. For a 140 amp alternator, 12-guage is too small even as a fusible link! I have a 60 amp "one wire" in my Rambler and Hornet simply because I could not find a smaller one! I'm running crimped and soldered 10-gauge wire from the alt directly to the hot side of the Ford-type starter solenoid. I had two cars stashed over there (Cheap rent for my tenant = free storage for old cars) in the garage. One is a '73 Brand F, but the other is my '65 440 American. Oil light came on some yrs back so I quit driving it. Spent a good yr finding and rebuilding a spare 195.6 OHV, then moved on to other projects including building my new house. So, the car has sat for ~4-5 yrs now. Was really dirty, but I gotta admit, I'm kinda anxious to get that other engine in, maybe replace the T96 with a T14 I have stashed, and go to a later non-big nut 2.73 geared '67 American six rear I've been tripping over since ~01 sometime. Body+interior not perfect, but not too bad either. That combo should get me 20-25 mpg. This could be my driver/work car next yr!! Kinda cool rediscovering something, ya know?
