Rich, I am assuming you are referring to the 360-390 head and not the smaller engines. That being said, what you want to do is take a head gasket and scribe the inner diameter on the head where the valve meets the edge of the chamber. Remove most of this material transitioning your port work into the floor of the chamber. Smooth out as much of the material that is constricting the air flow so the that intake and exhaust gasses can freely move around the entire circumference of the valve. Best way to do this if to have your machinist cut the material out with their mill and then smooth it out and polish with a dremel or die grinding tool.
