The car is not softly sprung and it's got a very positive feel to it, but it doesn't seem unacceptably harsh. I do lube the crap out of them when I install them to avoid squeaks, but is it that noticeable to you guys? ~J -----Original Message----- From: amc-list-bounces@xxxxxxx [mailto:amc-list-bounces@xxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Mark Price Sent: Thursday, November 02, 2006 10:56 AM To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: Swygert, Francis G MSgt 436 CES/CECM Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Prothane = Strut bushings I know they are hard and will add vibration, but at least they are available! Up till now you guys were out in the cold as far as replacing these things went. The fabricaters of us can always get something put together. The guy that just wanst to drive had a problem! Yesterday I was looking at Circle track misc stuff and wondering how hard it would be to take the front section of th eearly strut and turn it, then thread it, keeping it as large as possible. You could then use a piece of trailing arm to join it to a piece of late model strut to use that bushing. If you could end up witha 3/4" thread on the strut pieces it would still be plenty beefy. Composition would be Lower arm-Old style strut-Threaded Trailing arm-New style strut. You could also just use a threaded stock or make up the rear sections. My only interest in this would be for the guys that want to avoid using rod ends or Poly. It's very nice that Prothane noticed the need and stepped up to the plate! I know that soft poly is available, I wonder if it would be possible to have them make up soft poly. The other thing of note is that the earlybushings a pretty thin anyway, there may not be a whole lot of change between the two! On the same subject when did the changeover really take place? My brother told me he had troubles getting his struts together as he could not get the right bushings. His is a 65 Marlin. I haven't looked under my 65's to see what they look like. My brothers could be a changeover or??? Since these are often recommended to replace the Motorola's in our AMCs I thought this may be of interest. One item new to me: When removing and reusing an alternator belt (or any v-belt I assume) mark the belt so that you can replace it with the same direction of rotation. Otherwise the belt will stretch unnecessarily, come off the pulleys, etc. Ray Bohacz (sp?) the author also points out how the quality of rebuilt or remanufactured (terms now used interchangeably) alternators has suffered in recent years. Rack will be mounted to the cross-member. No more steering box, heavy springs, weak bushing, center link, hard to find/expensive brake units etc. I plan to have this as a bolt in unit. You remove your existing cross-member, control arms, center link, tie rod ends, steering box, strut rods, coil spring, idler arm, spindles, brake set up etc and bolt in this new cross-member with a rack and pinion, tubular control arms, coil over shocks (optional air ride) and trick brake set up and you are ready to go. I should then be able to adapt the original set up to fit most of our cars. Like stated before, my goal is to have this ready for next summer. Hopefully early spring. Why settle for a few upgrades that will end up costing more in the long run and still not be as good. A decent brake set up will cost you $1000-1500 by itself. This suspension kit will bring the ride and handling of your 30+ year old AMC into 2007 quality.
