1968 AMC Rambler Rebel Convertible SST (saratoga ca)

1968 convertible, one of only 1200 ever built, automatic, small V8, air,
PS, Power disc brakes, seats six, radio, air, power convertible top.
Wrecked and has been parked since about 1989 and was being driven when
parked, with no problems. We are asking for offers. The carpets are shot,
the windshield needs replacing, it needs painting, and the top needs
replacing but frame is there and we have a canvas top but has been sitting
new in its box since 1989 when we were working on it. Approx. 75K original
miles. We got it used and I show we serviced in 1969 at about 12,000 miles.
We have keys, and looking for pink slip, think we still have it but is not
problem as we can get duplicate one from DMV.

i am looking for a 304. i would prefer a running motor. anyone who could help me locate a 304 that is either running or be a good candidate for a rebuild would be great. i am hoping to have my project rambler done by next spring so i can drive it around and get bugs worked out of it before power tour. hopefully i get to make it next summer. any help will be great. thanks.

i was looking at the carcraft magazine where they put the new front suspension on a 65 i think it is mustang. looking at it, it looks VERY similar to my 62 classic. this sparked some interest. would i be able to adapt all that to my suspension? as everyone knows, mustangs have a major abundance of suspension parts. i know the spring looked like it was mounted a little more inboard, but does anyone know of much more differnce than that? if it might be a lot of work to adapt that set up, is there anyone on here who can help me get a disk brake kit off a concorde? all the salvage yards around where im from crush anything older than about 10 years as soon as it rolls in practiaclly. no luck around lawton ok.

Wolfgang, listers, I sent Laura a nice long letter. There are no lists
that she'd like to see, but I did tell her a bit about parts interchange
and AMC's outsourcing. Most of the Stant parts are pretty generic, like
radiator caps and thermostats. Others, like 70s and 80s emission parts,
are GM sourced and should cross reference. Hopefully that will help. If
they are looking to cross reference to Chrysler parts they are
definitely barking up the wrong tree! I did tell her that if they needed
anyone to try a part on something I could hook her up with almost any
year/model AMC owner. If that happens I'll post something to the list
with the desired model/year first.

Well, I was looking through the TSM that came with the truck (full 82
AND the 83 supplement! Reprints, but nice to have!!). The tow package
came with 3.31 gears. I might end up looking for a set of gears later.
Looks like 3.31 was a pretty popular gear for SJs. Available gears (from
late 80s TSM):
D - 2.73	- 15/41
B - 3.31	- 13/43
A - 3.54	- 11/39
H - 3.73	- 11/41
C - 4.10	- 10/41

According to www.wagonmasters.com, the 2.73 gears were stock in the GW
w/360 auto (only drivetrain from the late 70s on in the Grand Wagoneer),
all others were optional.

My J10 has the same trans and gears with a 258. Runs 1900 rpm at
60 in
4th.
Normal city driving uses 3rd a lot. 3rd in my trans is getting
noisey.
I've also used 4lo without locking the front hubs for low speed
maneuvering.
Shifting from lo to hi on the move gets a nasty crunch from the
transfer
case. I wouldn't recommend it as normal procedure. I have a set
of 3.31
diffs from a Cherokee that would help things if I ever get
around to
putting them in. :)
------------------------------

3.31 gears would bring rpm @ 60 up to ~2300, or drop you to 50
mph @
1900 rpm. Not bad, and I know you'd like the better pulling
power. I was
thinking a 3.08 would be sufficient -- ~2100 rpm @ 60. These
things
really don't like to cruise over 2500 rpm stock (65 mph w/3.31
gears),
but of course will. A better cam would help that, but I'm not
planning
on opening the engine anytime soon. A small 4V would be nice,
and I'll
keep on the lookout for a used one. If I rebuild in 3-4 years,
provided
rust hasn't started becoming an issue, I'll build a 4.0L, maybe
even
another stroker. Might go ahead with a 4.0L exhaust manifold for
now...
need an exhaust system! Couldn't find a vendor with pre-bent
pipe for
sale though. Wanted to put it on myself and skip the cat.

The drum doesn't just come off like the rears do -- as you've found out!
You have to remove all the studs first. This can be done by using a big
hammer. Support the hub inside the drum if you want to save the old drum
just in case you need it later. You will have to replace the studs, but
they are generic items and easy to find. You just need 1/2" threads and
the same length (a slight variation in length won't hurt).

Once the lugs are out, place a rag under the hub with the outside
sticking up. This will cushion the hub when it falls. Place a piece of
2x4 across the hub and whack it a good blow or two. It should pop right
off the drum. The PB Blaster around the enter won't hurt a thing! You
shouldn't have to remove the bearings, but you should replace the rear
bearing seal while you have the hub off. The bearing will fall out once
the seal is removed.

Put the new drum on the hub, and carefully install the new studs in. Put
a stack of washers on two opposite studs and use a lug nut turned flat
side against the washers to draw the hub on and those two lugs in. Try
to draw them evenly. Repeat with the other lugs. Make sure the lugs seat
all the way. When you put the wheel on for the first time, drive it
around a couple miles making sure you make some left and right turns,
then retighten the lugs. The driving/turning should ensure the lugs are
drawn up all the way, retighten just in case they weren't.

Okay, Okay! She gets the Concord and I get to keep looking for another perfect parts car. Gee Wiz, guys, y'all have stronger opinions and more to say about this than anything I have asked here, ever, hands down. LOL

Answering a few of the comments:

Jeff Reeves asked "Where are you at?"

Freeport, IL about 860 miles from you, but I'm not apposed to driving a bit to get good parts.

Justin Shelton sez: If the wife takes an interest in ANYTHING car-related, do exactly what she wants!

If I followed this advice without tempering I, or we, would own every car I showed her. The AMC is strong in this one, it is. Given half a chance she'd take over my 70 Hornet and the Spirit GT. She'd be happy with a different one for each day of the week. Since we live in the midst of 1000 tilled acres, none of it ours, save for seven, the collection is limited only by the hard surface storeage space.

Arfon offers: The right, semi-right and wrong aswer.

She'd be okay with what ever is decided as long as she gets a car that says AMC on it somewhere. However the objective is to get all the cars as safe as possible and that means the best and most reliable systems, like disc brakes (power prefered). I've put 2,000 of the almost 16,000 miles that are on the 70 Hornet with manual drum brakes and the adjustment from power discs to manual drums isn't fun for me and I know she would hate the transition. So until the Hornet has power discs she won't drive it.

Might be a good time to mention, Barbie is 5'3" and 93 pounds. She has a tough time carrying a 30 pack of Miller High Life. I can't imagine her driving the Hornet and being safe with those brakes, but that's another topic.

KENT ANDERSON writes: "You are a very lucky guy to have a lady who wants to get into the scheme of things."

Yes, yes I am! With Barbie the only limiting factor is how much can we afford to spend on the habit. She's not willing to help as much as she could, but that may be my fault. I'm not a good teacher and I have strict standards for the work I do. So I could stand some "mellowing." With the growth of our AMC habit she will need to be more involved and take on some aspect of the projects as her own. With the Concord we're up to seven.

Mark Price writes: "I vote that it appeared to be way to nice to part for a steering column and disc
brakes! Fix it up for her"

That seems to be the conscientious Mark. In my defense, it started out to be more than just the column and brake system, there's the left fender that would go to the Spirit as well as parts of the exhaust system and interior pieces. The Hornet needs a radiator, the neck is missing a piece, the brake system complete, possibly the AC compressor and some interior pieces as well, like the seats.

In the end guys, I was not expecting this car to be as nice as it is. Get this, I thought, "She won't be interested in saving this one." Wrong again.

Thanks for all the input, the saves have it by a landslide.

Jack

Yeah!
I always consider the 82-83 Concord as the last of the true shoebox Ramblers! er, AMC's!
I have an 82 Concord disc barebones set up that needs so TLC.
It is basically a set that has on espindle with a few bumps on it and one Caliper bracket needs a machine shop to redo the threads for one caliper bolt.
It's not really for sale, but if all else fails and you decide you need one I would conider selling it. It's really one of the more expensive ways to get discs though. All I have is Spindles,Caliper Brackets and some pisc; pieces. It takes about another $200 or so to finish it up.
There was a seller on Ebay not too long ago who had loaded calipers for the 82-83 setups for $19.99 plus shipping! This is an incredible deal. I bought a set and I think Jim in Florida did too. I can dig up the sellers info if you'd like, I don't know if he'd have anymore left.

What Frank said, Except, I'd press the new studs in.
If you use a lugnut to pull them in, Don't use the same nut for all the studs!
It's hard on the threads. Use lots of lube!
