We won the auction on ebay for an '82 Concord four door, 258, auto, tilt, PB, PS, heated backlite, ight blue with matching valure interior. The right front corner has been hit, taking out the fender, headlights, grille, bumper and I'm sure other small pieces. No mechanical damage. The car runs and drives fine and has a ton of parts that could go into the '70 Hornet and the '83 Spirit. Now what do I do? She wants the Concord and I want the parts! On one hand I see a car worth fixing and then out of the corner of my eye I see the Hornet waiting for a power disc brake conversion and a tilt column. Runs 1900 rpm at 60 in 4th. Normal city driving uses 3rd a lot. 3rd in my trans is getting noisey. I've also used 4lo without locking the front hubs for low speed maneuvering. Shifting from lo to hi on the move gets a nasty crunch from the transfer case. I wouldn't recommend it as normal procedure. I have a set of 3.31 diffs from a Cherokee that would help things if I ever get around to putting them in. :) ------------------------------ 3.31 gears would bring rpm @ 60 up to ~2300, or drop you to 50 mph @ 1900 rpm. Not bad, and I know you'd like the better pulling power. I was thinking a 3.08 would be sufficient -- ~2100 rpm @ 60. These things really don't like to cruise over 2500 rpm stock (65 mph w/3.31 gears), but of course will. A better cam would help that, but I'm not planning on opening the engine anytime soon. A small 4V would be nice, and I'll keep on the lookout for a used one. If I rebuild in 3-4 years, provided rust hasn't started becoming an issue, I'll build a 4.0L, maybe even another stroker. Might go ahead with a 4.0L exhaust manifold for now... need an exhaust system! Couldn't find a vendor with pre-bent pipe for sale though. So maybe you let her 'name' the car, something like Bluebell or Bessie, clean it, fix it and let enjoy AMC as much as you, sort of a pride of ownership thing. It's worked with my wife Paige now for 18 years, she has driven AMC's since we started living in sin in 88. (We are married long time now though). No need for a park brake! Where d id you get that info -- I don't know everything about the 196, this might be new. The cam profile might have changed, but most likely it was just a carb change and different tuning. AMC did change the cam bearings for some odd reason around 64 (different size than earlier), and the oil source for the head was changed around 63/late 62. Neither of those changes should have affected efficiency or power. The mileage changes could be rear gear related also. There was a change in mid 62 or sometime in 63 to the casting technique -- castings were a little thinner than older models. Maybe that's what you're thinking about? Like you, if anyone knows anything more I'd like to hear it! But I do know that the aluminum 196 uses the same lifters and some other valvetrain parts as the 232, so possibly the changes were to accomodate a unified parts bin. (no access from the jeep inside) It is supposed to have some sort of "block" installed to keep it from entering 3rd gear. With the low range transfer it is supposed to have a 40 ton tow capacity. I plan to drive it, if I can get more than 15 MPH. One is being parted out, so I will forward the link to that guy. In fact, 3 more were up for auction at Selfridge ANG in the past week. All you need are a 1980-up 8-lug D44 front from a J-20 and a 208J and you can drive it like a regular 4wd vehicle. They have Dana 70 rears with 4.88 gearing.
